Are Students Expected to Play Multiple Endings

In repertoire that has 1st & 2nd endings, are students expected to play both endings? On RCM performances that you can access with the code in the back of each book, both endings are rarely performed.

In one case, I had a student in Level 1 who performed only the 2nd endings of the piece she was playing just like the recording did and the examiner criticized her saying she should have played both endings. Is there a general rule or do I need to ask specifically about each piece as it comes up?
