Stylistic awareness and good musical taste contribute to appropriate articulation choices. Articulation in music is both a structural and an expressive consideration. Reliable editions provide accurate indications of composer’s intentions with regard to articulation—whenever the composer’s text includes that information. Many factors may contribute to a performer’s decisions with respect to articulation. Although students may certainly be creative in making articulation decisions, their choices should always be informed by some degree of stylistic understanding and an awareness of appropriate performance practice for the era and composer in question. An experienced teacher can guide students in making appropriate choices in regards to articulation, balancing “creativity” with stylistic awareness.
