Good fingering on any instrument is fingering that facilitates and often enhances the performance of a phrase or passage with ease, elegance, and economy of motion. In evaluating the technical requirements portion of an examination, examiners consider factors such as fluency, touch control, and shaping. In other words, they assess what they hear, not what they see. Fingering is a consideration only insofar as it affects the flow or shaping of a performance. For example, if a poor choice of fingering leads to audible stumbles in one or more of the technical requirements, the candidate’s mark will most likely be affected. On the other hand, if the “creative” fingering is either harmless or effective, the examiner may not even notice.
