Playing the Tonic Triad Before the Melody

In the playback portion of the ear tests for piano examinations, is it expected that the student play the triad first? I have always taught my students to find the triad on the keyboard but play only the melody they heard.

On the Playback Melody component of the Ear Test, while students are not required to play the tonic triad before playing back the melody, they are allowed to do so. There is no penalty for playing the tonic chord before the melody at any level. Playing the tonic triad before the melody sets up the student for success by ensuring that the hand is placed in the correct position to play the melody.
