When a student is asked to critique their own performance, the first comment is often a bemoaning of missed notes, memory slips, or other inaccuracies. Young students may even respond, “I made three mistakes,” as if there is a running score card above the piano. Especially for musicians with a limited performance history, the success of each performance may be measured in “right notes.”
