Dett was among the first people of colour to join the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). He devoted much of his compositional activity to evoking the essence of the African-American experience: the suffering, the spiritual devotion, and moments of joy and celebration. He frequently incorporated African-American folk songs and spirituals in his compositions.
