Learning Styles and Engagement
Alexa Wilks Lau
Tailoring a teaching approach to the individual learning style of each student is crucial for their short- and long-term engagement and success. Assessing which teaching style, or combination of styles, will be most effective for each student is an evolving process that requires patience and experimentation on the part of the instructor. Open communication with your student is integral in achieving the optimal balance of verbal, physical, and demonstrative instruction. Most students exhibit facets of two or more of the following four styles of learning, which means you will need to employ combinations of teaching approaches.
