The red pencil technique that works well for paper assignments is somewhat different in a digital environment. However, that hands on grading approach does cross over into the online environment when you use some apps designed for interacting with digital documents. Once your students' assignments are in PDF form, you can mark them up in a fairly similar way as you can (remove "you can") with paper documents.
