Principles for Effective Memorization
Sean Hutchins
Director of Research
One of the greatest fears of any performer—student or teacher—is forgetting what comes next in the middle of a memorized piece. Performing without printed music creates the great challenge of remembering thousands of notes, trying to recall each at exactly the right moment. In addition, a failure of memorization, even just a simple wrong note or rhythm error, can derail an entire performance and cost a good chunk of a student’s examination mark. So helping a student to memorize a piece is an important consideration for a teacher.
