A Path for Getting Started with The RCM Certificate Program

The RCM New Teachers' Community will guide teachers who have little or no experience with The RCM through every step of The RCM Certificate Program, from perusing the Syllabus to helping students complete their first successful examinations.

There’s no question about it—The RCM Certificate Program has monumental benefits for students, families, and teachers. At the same time, it can feel a little overwhelming when you are just getting started. That’s where this community can help—we will show you exactly what to do and answer any questions you may have along the way.
This community is moderated by Jonathan Roberts, a US Representative for The RCM Certificate Program, a member of the College of Examiners, and a music school owner in Boston. Jonathan will be available to respond to your questions and discussions, providing invaluable feedback and mentorship as you begin your journey with The RCM.

Learning Objectives

Participating in this community will help you to:

  • Develop knowledge and understanding relating to the RCM Exams
  • Recognize the value of the RCM Exams
  • Identify best practices to use the exams for your students and your music teaching studio
  • Build community among teachers who are new to the RCM Exam process

Before we dive in, watch this brief tutorial on how to use the discussion section.

Community Structure and Expectations

The RCM New Teachers' Community comprises seven lessons, each of which contain a video, accompanying text, and a task for you to complete. Each task will include prompts for discussion.

Please do respond to the prompts; spending just a few minutes engaging in discussion with your peers will help you get the most out of this community. As you craft your own response, read over a couple of the previous responses to the same prompt and weigh in with your own thoughts.

Unlike an in-person or synchronous learning experience, this is an asynchronous, discussion-based community. The more you contribute to the discussion, the more you will get out of the community. By responding to the prompts and discussing them with your new colleagues, you will be supercharging your own learning experience!

If you have any questions, feel free to message the community mentor, Jonathan Roberts, directly on the forum or email him at jonathan.roberts @ rcmusic.ca.

It’ll be awesome. And jokes are not only allowed but encouraged.

In addition to the many benefits to your learning and professional development that you will gain from fully participating in our community, there will be other valuable benefits, as well. Community members who complete the tasks on all seven lessons, engage in the posted discussions, and complete our exit survey will receive a unique discount code for 15% off the RCM online shop.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, here is your first discussion prompt.

Prompt:

Respond to this thread and introduce yourself! You may share as much or little information as you like, but here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • Where are you from?
  • How long have you been teaching?
  • What brought you to The RCM?

Start a new topic introducing yourself by selecting "Add a new discussion". If you don't see this button, please sign in or sign up first. If you’re not sure what to do, check out the tutorial above.
